Cloth Nappy Terminology
Don’t be scared by all of the cloth nappy terminology! This quick guide will help you understand it all means.
AIO – All In Ones: Nappies are all in one meaning all the boosting layers are enclosed in the nappy shell. No need to add boosters or covers. Perfect for no fuss, Dads and Daycares.
SIO – Snap In Ones: Nappies consist of a shell and all boosting is snapped in meaning you can add more or less depending on your baby and you can also reuse the shell and replace with dry boosting after a light wetting. Perfect for heavy wetters or those who want faster drying time or more control over their nappy.
PUL – Polyurethane Laminate: Material is a basic polyester coated in a layer of Polyurethane Laminate to make the material water resistant. Used to make the covers to go over fitted nappies. Material.
Booster – A booster is an insert placed inside a pouch of the nappy or placed on the crotch area to add an extra absorbent layer.
Trifold Booster – A trifold is a form of booster and is a square or rectangle booster you fold into threes adding 3 times the absorbent layers in on piece.
Liners – Liners are a product you place inside the nappy that makes clean up much easier. Flushable ones are made of a soft paper and can be removed with the waste attached and then flushed for easy disposal. Others can be made of microfiber or fleece and you need to wash the waste from them and wash, dry and reuse. Liners leave your nappies cleaner and help prevent staining.
Fitted Nappy – These nappies are absorbent all over and have no waterproof lining so they require a cover (PUL Cover) to avoid leaking. Great for heavy wetters and night time use.
Swim Nappy – A reusable swimming nappy with a fabric outer and a waterproof lining. They are not absorbent and are designed to keep sold waste in while swimming and can be washed and reused.
Multi Fit – Some companies offer a Multi Fit nappy. These nappies have different levels of snaps and can be adjusted to fit from a newborn to a toddler meaning the nappy can be used from the beginning to the end of your child’s nappy wearing days.
Wetbag – A wet bag is a fabric covered bag lined with a water resistant material. Bags are used to store wet nappies in while out and about.
Dry Pailing – This is when nappies are placed in a nappy bucket without water. This means they can be left a little longer (a day) and won’t attract mould quickly. Minky – A soft “furry” material used as an outer shell material.
Bamboo – A super absorbent material used in cloth nappies. Most boosters and fitted nappies are made from this material or a combination and most AIO’s will have one or more layers of bamboo in their core.
