Twins! Joshua and Isabella's Birth Story by Catherine Francis
We found out we were pregnant again when our first daughter Emily was around 9 months. It was a very big shock to dicover we were having twins! We found out what we were having as soon as we could and from that day we knew their names. I had no M/S with the twins and the pregnancy was so much better than my first.
There was no real sign of natural labour starting with the twins, same as with my first pregnancy. I did have a false labour but that lasted no more than a few hours. After that I had a 'show' and I thought it would happen soon, a few weeks past and still nothing.
Just before 38 weeks I had an appointment at the hospital and the doctor said she would let me go until 40 wks. I almost cried there and then, but thought I would wait and see how it progressed. I had another appointment the next week with a different doctor and told this doctor that the last doctor said I would be left to go to 40wks. There and then she booked me in for an induction the next day, I was 38 weeks.
I went in the next day at 12 midday and I was induced by a drip, I was told that as I was having twins, I would have to have an epidural straight up. I was happy for that as I had a bad labour before. So I had the epidural put in and the pump was place on my shoulder. Every 10 minutes I had to push it to release more.
When I was close to 10cm I still had a big pain on my left side where twin 1 was laying, so the midwife gave me a local into my epidural. It was pure bliss as the pain left straight away.
I was told to get up and try to go to the toilet ... DH noticed that the BP monitor on Twin 1's head dropped dramatically, he mentioned this and the midwife thought it may have just dropped off so she put me back on the bed.. She swore and said that twin number 1's head was coming and the doctor was called. Things went flying across the room and it went from 4 people in the room to about 15. I couldn't feel the contractions due to the local so a nurse had to feel my belly and tell me when to push.
Twin 1 a boy was born at 4:11pm weighing in at 5lbs 14oz on the 19/1/05. I got a cuddle and a look, Gary cut the cord and he was taken away to be examined at.
Twin 2 a girl, was having difficulty moving down to the birth canal as she was too tired. A midwife was on the phone and was telling theatre to prep for an emergency CS. I looked at DH and said no as I didn't want 1 VB and 1 CS. So with all my might I pushed and some how managed to get twin 2 to birth at 4:28pm weighing 6lbs. Again she was given to me and Gary cut the cord. I was looking at her and could see she was blue but couldn't physically say it, a midwife then saw and she was taken away. She needed a little oxygen but all was good.
We named then Joshua Lee and Isabella Catherine
5 min later I was given my 2 babies. They were so special and sooooo different from their big sister. After 10 min my Mum came in with Emily where she got to meet her new baby brother and sister. Emily was 15mths so didn't really know too much about what was going on.
All in all it was an awesome birth.
