Emily's Birth Story by Catherine Francis

Ok so she was born in 2003 so not too detailed as I never wrote it when it happened.

My due date was 2/9/03 and I remember this as it was my cousins birthday and the day they flew to QLD for a holiday and to meet their new cousin. Well nothing at all had happened. I had a bad pregnancy where I had morning sickness for 9 months 24 hours a day 7 days a week, the best I felt was in the 10 days that I was overdue.

I had a hospital appointment (public hospital) on the 10/9 as nothing had happened still, the doctor said that he could do an internal if I wanted ... I looked at his hands and said no haha and that I would wait and if to see if it was any better tomorrow.

On the 11/9 I had a hospital appointment in the morning, mum came with me and this time an internal was performed. My cervix was fully closed . So the doctor told me to go home, get organised and come back at 4pm to be induced.

At 4pm Gary(my husband), Mum and I went back to the hospital. I was induced with the gel and the same doctor from the morning joked that he would see me at 7am the next morning to induce me again. I said no way!

At 8pm the visiting hours were finished so Gary and mum went home for some sleep just in case I needed them. At 9pm the contractions started (typical). I went into the shower after the pain got worse. Before I knew, it was around 2am and I was transferred to the birthing suite and Gary and mum were called to come in. I had used heat packs and that didn't help, so I tried the gas and it made me hyperventilate (Although Gary loved it haha) so I asked for an epidural.

The epidural was given and worked straight away, I tried to sleep but I was on such a high that I couldn't, so we were talking and laughing for hours. At around 6:30/7am I was fully dilated and the doctor came back in to see me, I told him I was right and he was wrong and I didn't need another induction!

I was pushing but nothing was happening really, so essentially I had a long pushing stage. My contractions weren't close together so I was given a drip to try and help them speed up but that didn't work. So as I would push part of baby's head out she would have to sit there and wait till the next contraction or she would move back up the birth canal. It was very painful and frustrating as I felt I wasn't doing it right.

After a long process at 8:45am on the 12/9 our baby was born.

Yay a girl!

Gary cut the cord and we named her Emily Rose. She was 7lbs and so very beautiful.

I only needed a few stitches from the long pushing stage but not too many.
