Kudos to you Crayola!

by Cassie...

The other day I was taking out the recycling and just happened to see the little notice on the empty box from the latest pencils for my Miss Ruby, it stated that they only used reforested wood and ensured no rainforest wood was used.  I thought that was interesting, I don’t think I ever stopped to think about the wood going into little things like pencils.  So it got me thinking and I jumped onto the website and I must say I was shocked. Shocked in a good way, they are a great ‘green company’, and a fantastic global citizen!

I always love to read the ‘About Us’ section of any website – it’s a bit of the face behind the company!  This is the first couple of lines of their ‘about’ page :

“At Crayola we believe being “responsible” means doing what is right. It is being a good citizen in the communities and countries where we operate and our products are found.”

And they back this up with some amazing green initiatives along with the reforested wood initiative. For starters you may have realised that the traditional Crayola texta barrel has changed from White to Black – this is because they are now using recycled bottle tops in the production. They use over 1 million pounds of recycled plastic.

But wait it gets better ! Crayola have set up a 15 acre solar farm with more than 26,000 solar panels. This means that they have enough solar energy to produce 1 billion of the 3 billion crayons produced annually!

WOW – so that’s how Crayola are making a difference in 3 ways ! You can read more from the Crayola Website which is where I got all the stats and figures! Also check out the Crayola website as there are HEAPS of activities for the kids ! I know that next time a pack of Crayola hits my shopping basket i am supporting a responsible green company – again Kudos to you Crayola and thanks !
